Our Mission
The mission of the State Office of Vital Records is to create, maintain, protect, and provide access to vital events and vital records data to sustain the health and well-being of Georgia constituents in a manner that is timely, accurate, and secure.
About Vital Records
The State Office of Vital Records is responsible for registering, preserving, amending, and certifying all Georgia vital events. Record types include:
- Birth
- Death
- Marriage
- Fetal deaths (stillbirth)
- Induced Termination of Pregnancy (ITOP)
We are also responsible for processing paternity acknowledgments, legitimations, adoption orders, and other amendments and corrections to vital records. In addition, we manage the State of Georgia’s Putative Father Registry.
All of Georgia’s 159 county vital records offices can issue birth and death certificates for Georgia. County locations may also assist with initiating applications to amend or correct vital records, paternity acknowledgments, or delayed certificates, prior to submission to the State Office of Vital Records for processing.
The State Office of Vital Records provides information about vital events from 1919 to the present. For records older than 1919, contact the county in which the event occurred. You may also contact the Georgia Archives for more information.
Please note: We only provide records of vital events that occurred in Georgia. For events that took place outside of Georgia, please contact the vital records office in that state or territory for more information. The National Center for Health Statistics maintains contact information for vital records offices throughout the United States.
