Primary Service Provider Model
The Babies Can’t Wait program utilizes the Primary Service Provider (PSP) approach to support families of infants and toddlers in achieving the outcomes established in the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). Using this evidenced-based approach, a team of professionals work together to provide evaluation/assessment, intervention, consultation, and education in order to support children, families, and caregivers. One member of the team serves as the PSP and the primary liaison between the family and other team members. The PSP receives consultation from the other team members and may use adult learning strategies, e.g., coaching, as a way to interact with and teach other team members, including the family and caregivers. The PSP is selected with input from the team to include the parent, based on who is the best match for the child and family.
Determining Levels of Service & Supports
For any PSP, determining levels of support is based on the following:
- Family priorities
- Child needs
- Team discussion of child and family needs – team includes family, Service Coordinator, evaluators and if applicable current PSP.
Based on the needs of the child and family, services can be scheduled/provided as follows:
- Primary Service Provider visit – interventionist is assigned and designated as PSP for the family.
- Joint visits with the PSP (Coaching visits) – When a need or concern arises that requires consultation from another discipline, both providers are present at the visit and the joint visitor is coaching the PSP on how to best support the family and child in future visits.
- Supplemental visits – When a need or concern arises that requires direct assessment and/or short-term intervention, a visit is completed with the family without the PSP; the supplemental visitor is responsible for an after-visit colleague to colleague coaching session to share information.
