EMS Initial Education

EMS Initial Education Courses are conducted by organizations designated by the Office of EMS and Trauma (OEMST). There are five levels of EMS Initial Education Program Designation: EMR, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, and Critical Care Paramedic. All Paramedic programs must also be accredited by CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs).

Initial Education Program Requirements

  • Program Sponsor: Ensures adequate resources and support for staff and students.
  • Program Director: Must hold appropriate Instructor/Coordinator licensure at the highest level the program will be designated at.
  • Lead Instructor: Must hold appropriate Instructor/Coordinator licensure.
  • Medical Director: Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Fellowship trained in EMS, or prior EMS licensee.
  • Instructional Staff: Licensed at the appropriate Instructor or Instructor/Coordinator level.
  • Advisory Committee: Includes Program Director, Medical Director, lead instructors, a community member, and the Program Sponsor at a minimum.

Designation Process

  1. Notify your Regional Training Coordinator of your intent to begin an Initial Education Program and complete the following document:
  2. Submit a completed New EMS Initial Education Program Designation Application
  3. The Office of EMS and Trauma will schedule a Virtual Pre-Designation Visit
  4. Department Review:
    • On-site facility and Minimum Equipment inspection
