Continuing Education

To renew your Georgia EMT/EMT-I/AEMT/CT/Paramedic/Paramedic with Critical Care Endorsement License, you will need to have completed the minimum number of hours listed below for the level you are licensed, which is approved by the Department or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE). Courses approved by another State Office of EMS will be reviewed for acceptance on a case-by-case basis.

Minimum Required Hours for EMT, EMT-I, AEMT, CT, and Paramedic License Renewal (Licenses that expire on or before 3/31/2028)

You will need to complete a total of 40 hours of State or CAPCE-approved EMS continuing education credits, which include:

  • 8 hours of Pediatric topics
  • 4 hours of Cardiovascular topics (STEMI and Stroke)
  • 4 hours of Trauma topics
  • 24 hours of General EMS topics (except CPR and ACLS topics)

Additionally, the following are required:

  • All EMS Providers must maintain BLS certification from a Department-approved sponsor.
  • All Cardiac Technicians/Paramedics must maintain ACLS certification from a Department-approved sponsor.

While the National Registry is not required to be renewed for recertification in Georgia, you will need to complete a total of 40 hours of state-approved EMS continuing education credits in order to maintain your license active.

Minimum Required Hours for EMT, EMT-I, AEMT, CT, and Paramedic License Renewal (Licenses that expire on or after 3/31/2029)

The hours of continuing education must include the minimum topic hours identified below that are State or CAPCE-approved EMS continuing education hours.

  • All EMS Providers must maintain BLS certification from a Department-approved sponsor.
  • All Cardiac Technicians/Paramedics must maintain ACLS certification from a Department-approved sponsor.

Beginning with the 2027 – 2029 license cycle, EMS Providers will be allowed to use the hours from BLS (4 hours) and ACLS (6 hours) recertification toward their required CE for license renewal. These hours should be listed under the Cardiovascular topic area when adding to your Education Report in the license management system.

  • Maintain IBSC or BCEN Board certification

Minimum Required Hours for EMT-Responder (EMT-R) License Renewal

You will need to complete a total of 16 hours of State or CAPCE-approved EMS continuing education that meets the NREMT EMR recertification requirements AND renew your NREMT certification at the EMR level.

All EMT-Responders are required to maintain NREMT's EMR certification.

Once you have completed approved continuing education, you will document that education in your Education Report within your license profile located in the license management system and submit your license renewal application before the expiration date.

It is required for ALL licensed personnel (medics and instructors) to input their continuing education for each renewal cycle into the EMS License Management System.

It is your responsibility to save all continuing education transcripts, which you can provide to the State should you be audited by the Georgia State Office of EMS and Trauma. Failure to provide the requested, required documentation will result in the suspension or revocation of your EMS license.

Continuing Education Hours Tracking in LMS

The LMS allows medics to track their CEUs throughout a renewal cycle, and medics will be required to have all 40 hours of their CEUs recorded in the system prior to being allowed to renew their license. Medics who renew their license must have current CEUs at the time of renewal. It is highly encouraged for medics to keep their CEUs up-to-date throughout the renewal cycle.

As a reminder, there are only two types of continuing education courses considered acceptable for medic license renewal in Georgia - those approved by the Georgia Office of EMS and Trauma and those hours approved by CAPCE. For medics who take Office of EMS and Trauma-approved CEUs, instructors will be able to add your name to the roster for the course and automatically add the hours to your profile at the completion of the course, including state-approved conferences.
