CarFit
CarFit is a free, interactive, and educational program that provides a quick, yet comprehensive review of how well drivers and their vehicle work together, increasing their safety and mobility on the road.
The check-up includes:
- A review of 12 key areas such as adequate space from the steering wheel, proper seat belt use, and properly adjusted head restraints
- Tips and techniques on using and adjusting safety devices
- Each checkup takes about 20 minutes
- Assurance that this is not a driving test nor a mechanical inspection
The program, which was developed by AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association, also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance driving safety and increase mobility. For more information, LINK
The 55+ Driver Safety Program trains volunteers to be CarFit Technicians and/or Event Coordinators. Technicians review 12 key areas such as distance from the steering wheel, proper seat belt use, and head restraint position to help drivers achieve the safest, most ergonomic fit in their vehicles. Often an Occupational Therapist participates to provide additional 1:1 for drivers during the checkout process.
A CarFit checkup takes about 20 minutes and includes tips and techniques on using and adjusting safety devices, advice on adaptive equipment such as seat belt handles (if appropriate), and materials on community-specific resources that can enhance driving safety and increase mobility.
