Low THC Oil Information for Patients and Caregivers

Below you will find the key information that patients and caregivers need to know to obtain a Low THC Oil card. Please refer to the FAQs below or contact the Georgia Low THC Oil Program with any further questions.

Requesting a Low THC Oil card:

  1. Consult with your physician about obtaining a Low THC Oil card if you have a qualifying condition(s)
  2. If approved by your physician, fill out the Download this pdf file. Low THC Oil Waiver and have it notarized. Provide the waiver and a valid driver’s license, state-issued identification, passport, military ID, or other valid forms of identification for you and your caregiver to your physician
  3. Pick up your Low THC Oil card from the health department location nearest your residence (can take up to 10 business days) once verified by the Georgia Low THC Oil Program

Obtaining your Low THC Oil card:

  • You will be notified when card is ready for pickup, and you can check your card status here
  • You will need to sign an Download this pdf file. authorization form if someone other than yourself or your caregiver is picking up the card on your behalf
  • You will need to show a valid driver’s license, state-issued identification card, passport, military ID, or other valid form of identification to pick up your card
  • Each Low THC Oil card is $25 and you can pay the fee upon pickup

Once you have your Low THC Oil card:

  • Your card is active for two years
  • Consult your physician if there is a need to renew

Waiver patients and caregivers need to fill out, sign, and have notarized to get a Low THC Oil card

The use of cannabinoids and THC containing products have not been approved by the FDA and the clinical benefits are unknown and may cause harm. By signing the waiver, patients and caregivers are voluntarily agreeing and consenting to treatment through the use of cannabinoids and THC containing products and waive any rights to actions against the physician and the State of Georgia for the use of cannabinoids and THC containing products.

  • How do you apply for a Low THC Oil card? 
    1. Consult with a registered physician about getting a Low THC Oil card if you have a qualifying condition(s)

  • How long does it take for the Low THC Oil card to be ready? Where do you pick it up?

    Low THC Oil cards can take up to 10 business days from the time your physician certifies you in the Low THC Oil Registry. To check your card status, click here.

    Cards will be printed and sent to a health department location nearest to the cardholder’s (patient’s or caregiver’s) residence. Cardholders will be contacted by a staff member from the selected location when their card is ready and must provide a valid driver’s license, a state-issued identification, passport, military ID, or other valid forms of identification to pick up their card. 

  • What if more than one person is caring for the child or adult? 

    If there is more than one parent or legal guardian, each may apply for a separate card. There is a limit of two caregivers per patient.

  • Can you, a cardholder, authorize an individual to pick up your Low THC Oil card?

    Patients and caregivers may authorize an individual to pick up their Low THC Oil card from the health department on their behalf with a signed Download this pdf file.  authorization form . The individual picking up the card should have identification for themselves as well as the cardholder.

  • How much does the Low THC Oil card cost, and is it covered by health insurance? When do you pay for it? 

    The fee for a Low THC Oil card is $25 per card, and it is not covered by health insurance. Cardholders must pay for their card when they pick it up at the health department.

  • How long is the Low THC Oil card valid? 

    The Low THC Oil card is valid for two years from the date a physician certifies a patient or caregiver in the Low THC Oil Registry. The expiration date is printed on the front of the card. After that time, you must consult your physician to renew the card.

  • What happens if you lose your card, or the information on your card is wrong or outdated? Can it be corrected? 

    If you lose your card, or the information on your card is wrong or outdated, please get in touch with the Low THC Oil Program by emailing [email protected] or calling (770) 909-2765. 

  • Where can you buy Low THC Oil after receiving your card?

    You can go to the Georgia Medical Cannabis Commission’s website to find locations that sell Low THC Oil.

  • Your employer tests for drug use, including cannabis. Can they test you if you are a medical cannabis patient? Can they fire you if you use medical cannabis?

    Low THC Oil can show on drug tests and is used at the patient’s discretion. Georgia law does not prevent an employer from testing for the use of cannabis (for any reason) or taking action against an employee who tests positive for the use of cannabis (for any reason).​
